The Egyptian fire cats

Herodotus says in his Histories that when an Ancient Egyptian’s house caught fire his first thought was to stop his cats running into the blaze. Presumably the cats feared that something precious might be trapped within the building and in need of saving and bringing out.  We don’t know what Herodotus thought about this, or if he thought about it at all, but he wrote it down in his book so it must have happened more or less as he said.
